Kenyan President William Ruto has strongly condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, calling it “unlawful, unjust, and a violation of fundamental principles of international law.”

Speaking at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine in Switzerland, President Ruto emphasized the need for parties to demonstrate good faith and soften their positions to achieve lasting peace.

He highlighted the devastating consequences of the conflict, which has resulted in 500,000 deaths, 7.1 million displacements, and disrupted supply chains globally.

President Ruto also drew attention to the ongoing wars in the Middle East and Africa, which have caused immense destruction and human suffering.

The Kenyan President noted that 16 conflicts are currently raging in Africa, affecting regions such as the Western Sahel, Horn of Africa, Lake Chad basin, and Great Lakes region. He specifically mentioned the senseless war in Sudan, which threatens the country’s integrity and has caused widespread death, destruction, and hopelessness.

President Ruto emphasized the severe impact of conflicts on education, citing the closure of over 13,250 schools in West Africa, depriving 2.5 million children of education. In the Sahel region, nearly 7,800 primary schools attended by 1.4 million children were closed as of June 2023.

The Kenyan President’s speech emphasized the urgent need for peaceful resolution of conflicts, highlighting the cumulative loss of millions of lives and forced displacement of 40.4 million Africans since 2011.

He urged parties to demonstrate good faith and work towards lasting peace, underscoring Kenya’s clear and unequivocal stance against Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
