Sudan Accuses UAE Of Arming, Funding Militia Groups 

The Sudanese government has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of fueling the 14-month war in the country by providing weapons to rival forces.

The UAE has however denied the allegation, calling it “ludicrous” and a “shameful abuse” by one of the warring parties.

The accusation was made during a UN Security Council meeting, where Assistant Secretary-General Martha Pobee warned of atrocities being committed along ethnic lines in Sudan’s western Darfur region.

Sudanese Ambassador Al-Harith Mohamed claimed that the UAE has been supplying weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been battling the Sudanese military.

The UAE’s ambassador, Mohamed Abushahab, rejected the allegations, demanding evidence and accusing Sudan’s government of refusing to return to peace talks. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield reiterated a US appeal for external actors to stop fueling the conflict.

UN experts have reported credible evidence of UAE weapons shipments to the RSF, which was formed from Janjaweed fighters by former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. The conflict has killed over 14,000 people and displaced millions, with Darfur facing imminent famine and ongoing sexual violence.

The Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to the siege of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.

The council also urged the RSF and Sudan’s military to seek a peaceful resolution.
