The Nigerian Army has promoted Second Lieutenant Oluchukwu Owowoh to the substantive rank of Lieutenant, solidifying her position as a trailblazer in the military.

This development comes after her remarkable achievement as the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

According to a statement released by the Nigerian Defence Academy, the promotion was announced by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, and was decorated at a ceremony held at the Nigerian Defence Academy Officer’s Mess and Golf Club on June 26, 2024.

The NDA Commandant, Major General JO Ochai, praised Lieutenant Owowoh’s exceptional record during her cadet days, which earned her the rare opportunity to train at Sandhurst.

He also commended her dedication and commitment to the military.

The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, academic and non-academic staff, and family members, who gathered to celebrate this significant milestone.

Lieutenant Owowoh, 24, made headlines in April when she became the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from Sandhurst.

Her achievement was hailed as a significant step forward for gender equality in the military.
