SOS: Erosion washes away section of Onitsha—Owerri Highway in Anambra [photos]

A section of the Onitsha – Owerri Federal Highway in Oba, Anambra State, has been taken over by erosion, according to photos posted online by Twitter user, @NnewiCity.

According to the post, one lane has caved in, and the remaining lane may likely soon cut off if the appropriate government agencies do not intervene.

In the event of such, those coming from Aba, Owerri and Port Harcourt will find it very difficult getting to Onitsha, as they will be left with the option of navigating through unsafe roads in village and towns of Idemmili Local Government before they get to Onitsha.

This will not only endanger lives and properties, but will be time consuming as well, as some of the roads are not in good condition and will evidently elongate the journey.

Recently, a businessman, Joshua, called the attention of News Band to the ugly development and wondered is the state government is aware and what it is doing about it.

An observer noted that the government failed to take action to prevent or repair the erosion, and as a result, the road has become impassable.

He lamented that the development gave the usual tell-tale signs of failing but that those responsible looked the other way until the road was cut off.

“A trip on most highways in Nigeria shows various levels of failures and dangers waiting to happen. We should take maintenance seriously!” he advised.

This medium reached out to Mr. Christian Aburime, the Press Secretary to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, over the lamentable condition of the road but he has yet to respond to the message sent to his WhatsApp at the moment of this publication. Read more.
