Police Inspector arrested over armed robbery

A serving Mobile Police inspector has been taken into custody over his role in a brutal armed robbery that claimed the life of a young fuel attendant in Kontagora, Niger State.

The spokesman of the command in Niger State confirmed the arrest.

The unfortunate incident occurred on April 15, 2026, at about 2:40pm at Garun Mallam Filling Station, located behind the BCG Garage in Kontagora Local Government Area.

Security sources said that the attack was reported through a distress call. Two armed men had stormed the facility, one of the suspects was said to be dressed in a Mobile Police uniform and arrived on a motorcycle.

The criminal elements reportedly bought fuel before demanding cash from the attendant. When the victim, identified as 20-year-old Jibrin Inuwa of Garun Mallam, resisted, he was shot in the chest.

He was rushed to the General Hospital in Kontagora, where medical personnel confirmed him dead. His remains were subsequently released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Police patrol teams from ‘A’ Division in Kontagora, led by the Divisional Police Officer, launched a swift operation and tracked the suspects to the Dadinkowa area, behind a vigilante office. A gun battle ensued during the pursuit.

One of the suspects was subdued after being shot in the leg. He was disarmed and taken into custody.

The suspect was later identified as Inspector Ahmed, a serving officer attached to the 61 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Kontagora, who was reportedly on special assignment in Agwara at the time.

According to the report, he was initially treated at the General Hospital, Kontagora, before being transferred to the Police Clinic in Minna for further medical care.

An AK-47 rifle bearing serial number 38262, along with 12 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, was reportedly recovered from him.

Police sources disclosed that efforts are ongoing to arrest the second suspect who fled the scene, while investigations into the incident continue.
