MTN Nigeria implements 200% data tariff hike amid economic challenges

MTN Nigeria, one of the country’s leading telecommunications providers, has announced a significant increase in its data tariffs, raising prices by up to 200%.
This move comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff adjustment for telecom operators, citing prevailing market conditions and the need for sustainability in the sector.
The new pricing structure, which took effect immediately, has sparked widespread outrage among subscribers, many of whom are already struggling with the country’s economic challenges.
NCC Approves Tariff Adjustment
The NCC, in a statement released in January 2025, confirmed the approval of a tariff increase for telecommunications companies.
Reuben Mouka, the commission’s spokesperson, explained that the decision was made under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, which grants the NCC regulatory powers to review and adjust tariffs.
Mouka stated that the adjustment allows for a maximum increase of 50% on current tariffs, a compromise from the over 100% hike initially requested by some network operators.
“The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50% of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100% requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability,” Mouka said.
MTN’s New Pricing Structure
In compliance with the NCC’s approval, MTN Nigeria has implemented a new pricing structure that has seen data costs skyrocket.
Diaspora Digital Media observed the following changes:
*15GB Data Bundle: Previously priced at ₦2,000, the new cost is ₦6,000.
*1.5TB Plan: Increased from ₦150,000 to ₦240,000.
*100GB Bundle: Now costs ₦25,000 for 90GB, up from ₦20,000 for 100GB.
*600GB Bundle: Increased from ₦75,000 to ₦120,000 for 480GB.
The price hike has left many subscribers frustrated, with some describing the new rates as exorbitant and unaffordable.
*Public Outcry on Social Media
The announcement has triggered a wave of criticism on social media, with many Nigerians expressing their dissatisfaction.
Subscribers have accused MTN of exploiting its dominant market position and failing to consider the economic realities faced by its customers.
An X user, Khan, wrote: “I think it’s high time we boycotted MTN. Their network is terrible, and their data plans are a rip-off.
“The 15GB package doesn’t even last three days. During the protest, they deliberately sabotaged their own network to prevent it from happening.”
Another user, Silva, lamented: “Nigeria is a very difficult place to live in, honestly.
“MTN waking up one day to increase their weekly 15GB data from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 without prior warning is textbook insanity. That’s ₦24,000 in a month, almost the minimum wage of the country on data. Bruh, this is hell.”
*MTN’s Response
In a statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account, MTN Nigeria acknowledged the price increase, attributing it to the need to enhance services and improve customer experience.
“Y’ello! Thanks for stopping by. We apologise for any inconvenience and delayed response. A price increase has been implemented to enhance our services and serve you better, which is why you are seeing the updated amount,” the company wrote.
*Economic Implications
The tariff hike comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with rising inflation, a weakened currency, and widespread economic hardship.
Many Nigerians rely heavily on mobile data for work, education, and communication, making the increase particularly burdensome.
Industry analysts have warned that the hike could further widen the digital divide, as many low-income earners may no longer be able to afford internet access.
This could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s digital economy and its efforts to achieve widespread internet penetration.
