US VP Harris tipped to replace Biden Amid Concerns Over Debate Performance

President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with Democratic governors on Wednesday evening to address concerns and backlash following his underwhelming performance in last week’s debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The meeting, which will take place virtually at 6:30 p.m. ET (2230 GMT), comes as some members of the Democratic Party have begun to question Biden’s candidacy for the November 5 election.

Biden spoke with Representative Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader, on Tuesday and Senator Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader, earlier on Wednesday to discuss the growing concerns within the party.

The meetings come as some lawmakers and party leaders have begun to float alternative candidates, including Vice President Kamala Harris, as a potential replacement for Biden.

Jim Clyburn, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and instrumental in Biden’s 2020 victory, suggested on CNN that the party should prepare for a “mini-primary” if Biden steps aside.

Clyburn expressed support for Vice President Harris as a potential successor, emphasizing the importance of selecting a strong running mate.

The meeting with Democratic governors is seen as an effort by Biden to reassure his supporters and address concerns about his candidacy.

However, some governors are seen as potential challengers if pressure mounts for Biden to step aside.

Many are currently supporting Biden’s campaign efforts, but there is growing unease within the party about his ability to win in November.

Despite speculation, Reuters reported that Biden has indicated no intention of abandoning his re-election bid.

However, a close ally of the President told The New York Times that Biden recognizes the urgency to rebound from his disappointing debate performance last week, acknowledging that his candidacy’s viability hinges on convincing the public of his fitness for office in the coming days.
