Renowned Nigerian writer and Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has been celebrated by the Royal Academy of Morocco on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
The event, held in collaboration with the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), recognized Soyinka’s outstanding contributions to African and global literature.
Soyinka, born in 1934, has had a profound impact on the literary world, exploring themes of oppression, justice, and human dignity through his works. His notable plays, such as “A Dance of the Forests” (1966) and “Death and the King’s Horseman” (1975), have cemented his position as a leading voice in African literature.
The Royal Academy of Morocco honored Soyinka’s dedication to social justice and his unwavering advocacy for African cultures. Permanent Secretary Abdeljalil Lahjomri praised Soyinka as a “defender of African cultures” and a keen observer of the continent’s complexities.
PAWA Secretary-General Wale Okediran commended Soyinka’s diverse talents as a poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, and satirist, inspiring aspiring African writers. Soyinka’s ability to pose critical questions and amplify African voices globally has made him a literary icon.
The celebration strengthened cultural ties between Morocco and West Africa, with Soyinka emphasizing historical parallels and his friendship with the late Senegalese president, Léopold Senghor.
Professor Raphael Liogier described the event as a significant symbol of Africa’s potential, recognizing African talent like Soyinka and asserting Africa’s global influence.
