Despite President William Ruto‘s attempt to quell the unrest by sacking his cabinet and promising reforms, Kenyans remain resolute in their demand for his resignation.
The protests, which began over a week ago, show no signs of dissipating, with demonstrators insisting that Ruto must step down.
The latest development comes after Ruto dismissed almost his entire cabinet, except for the foreign minister and deputy president, in a bid to restore public trust. However, the move has failed to placate the protesters, who view it as a cosmetic gesture.
“We don’t want partial solutions; we want Ruto to go,” said protester Hyrence Mwangi, 25. “He has had two years to deliver on his promises, but all we’ve seen is corruption, nepotism, and brutality. It’s time for him to step aside.”
The protests, which started as peaceful demonstrations against proposed tax hikes, turned deadly when police fired at crowds who stormed parliament on June 25. At least 39 people were killed in the demonstrations, according to rights groups.
Ruto’s promises of reforms and a new cabinet have fallen on deaf ears, with many Kenyans viewing them as a desperate attempt to cling to power. “We’ve heard enough promises; we want action,” said Melisa Agufana, 24, a law student. “Ruto must resign, and a new government must be formed to address our grievances.”
