A female biker has been killed along Apapa-Iganmu highway in Lagos State after an articulated truck tragically fell on her.
The accident according to report occurred around 6am on Monday, when the truck, heading towards Iddo, fell off the bridge and trapped the biker near the Sifax area, inward Iganmu bridge.
Operatives from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders immediately arrived at the scene to recover the body from beneath the truck.
Mr Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the incident, stating it occurred around 6:15am.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver lost control due to brake failure while descending Iganmu bridge.
The driver was speeding before losing control according to witness, leading to the fatal accident. The driver fled the scene after realizing the severity of the incident.
“Immediately after the incident, LASTMA personnel called in other emergency responders, including the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), for a rescue operation,” Giwa said.
The body was subsequently taken away by personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the containerized truck was evacuated to clear the way for vehicular movement on Iganmu bridge. Police officers from Ijora Badia provided security during the rescue operation.
While expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased, Giwa urged truck drivers to adhere to speed limits both within and outside the state.
He also advised motorcyclists to obey traffic rules and regulations as stipulated in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
