Herdsmen gun down Labour Party chairman in Benue

Gunmen suspected to be terror herdsmen have killed one Mr. Sunday Oche, the Labour Party Chairman for Igumale Ward 1 in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State

Newsband gathered that the unfortunate incident occurred while Oche was returning from his cassava farm with five others around 4:30pm on Tuesday.

The victims were reportedly ambushed by the criminal elements as they rode on two motorbikes.

A friend of the Labour Party chieftain narrated that the armed herders flagged them down and immediately shot Oche, who was the first to be confronted. He died at the scene.

While realizing it was an ambush, the other five attempted to escape but sustained serious injuries in the process.

They abandoned their motorbikes and managed to flee the scene.

Local youths who arrived later found Oche’s body but reported that the attackers had already fled.

Mr Tersoo Orbunde, the Benue State Labour Party spokesman, confirmed the sad incident.

He said, “He is a Ward Chairman from Igumale, Sunday Oche. He went to his cassava farm and he was attacked and killed.

“Our people have gone there to console the family, and we are waiting for them to arrange for his burial.”

The matter has also been reported to the police for further action.

Oche’s burial is scheduled for Thursday, September 5, 2024, while the injured individuals have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police authorities in Benue State are yet to issue a statement in respect to the development.
