The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) reports that 18 people died in a tragic road accident.
This incident involved a trailer and a mini truck in the Oko-Olowo area of Ilorin West LGA Kwara State.
Olawuyi Gani, KWARTMA’s spokesperson, confirmed the details in a social media statement on Thursday.
He explained that the accident occurred on Wednesday when a trailer, loaded with cattle and passengers, collided with a minitruck at high speed.
Gani described the crash as devastating.
He stated, “A head-on collision occurred along the Oko-Olowo expressway involving a 10-tyre trailer marked TRL014GZ and a mini truck.” This tragic event took place on January 22, 2025.
The incident was reported around 3:34 PM. It involved a 10-tyre trailer carrying both cattle and people, which collided with an unidentified mini truck. This excessive speed led to a fatal crash, resulting in numerous deaths.
Emergency responders from KWARTMA, the FRSC, and the Nigeria Police arrived at the scene. They confirmed that 18 individuals died, while others were transported to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Bamidele Michael, acting CEO of KWARTMA, expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He emphasized the critical need for safe driving practices and announced plans for collaboration with relevant agencies to enhance road safety on the Oko-Olowo/Eyenkorin route.
