Trump Pays Writer $5m in Assault, Defamation Case

US President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll following a civil court ruling that found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming her.

The payment was confirmed in a court filing on Tuesday, ending one chapter of a legal battle that began three years ago.

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, welcomed the development, saying the jury’s decision had now been fully enforced.

“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages awarded by the jury,” Kaplan said in a statement.

The payment follows the US Supreme Court’s decision in late June to reject Trump’s appeal against the May 2023 verdict, effectively making the judgment final.

Carroll, an 82-year-old former journalist and columnist, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her inside a dressing room at a New York department store in 1996.

After she detailed the allegation in a 2019 book, Trump dismissed the claim, describing Carroll as a “nut job” and insisting she fabricated the story.

The latest payment relates to the 2023 civil verdict. Trump is also facing a separate defamation judgment that ordered him to pay Carroll $83.3 million for statements he made after the allegations became public.

Although that judgment has been upheld on appeal, its enforcement remains on hold while legal proceedings continue.
