Abuja, Nigeria – January 30, 2025 – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially refuted claims made by activist Omoyele Sowore.
He alleged that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s tenure is illegal.
The Force stated today that these assertions are unfounded and misleading, intending to weaken public trust in IGP Egbetokun’s appointment.
Furthermore, the Nigeria Police affirmed that IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is legally valid, as outlined in the Police Act, 2020 (as amended).
Specifically, PART III, Section 7 (6) of the Act mandates that “the person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.”
The Police Council has officially ratified Egbetokun’s appointment, confirmed by the Presidency, ensuring his tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027.
