Nigerian winger Kehinde Ozein Hamzat has taken another important step in his football career after joining Turkish club Fişekspor ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The move takes the 2026 Lagos State University graduate into a new football environment after years of development through university and grassroots football in Lagos, giving him an opportunity to continue his career outside Nigeria.
Fişekspor announced Hamzat’s arrival on Saturday as part of its squad planning for the new season, presenting the Nigerian winger as a player expected to add energy and quality to the team.
The Istanbul-based club made it clear that it sees more than just another new arrival in Hamzat, highlighting his talent, energy and fighting spirit as qualities it believes can contribute to the team.
“Welcome to the family, Kehinde! Together, towards new goals. Together, stronger!” the club said in its announcement.
For Hamzat, the transfer represents an opportunity to turn years of football development in Lagos into a new chapter on the international stage.
The winger graduated from Lagos State University in 2026, where he studied Human Kinetics, Sports and Health Education under the Faculty of Education. He also represented the university’s male football team, the Trail Blazers, during his time at LASU.
Before completing his degree, Hamzat had obtained a diploma and subsequently continued his education through full-time undergraduate studies.
Football, however, remained central to his development.
After his university football experience, Hamzat continued his playing career with several grassroots teams in Lagos and its surrounding areas. That period provided another platform for him to develop as a winger before the opportunity to move to Turkey emerged.
Now, the Nigerian will have to make the transition from the familiar football environment of Lagos to life in Istanbul.
Fişekspor’s New Addition
Founded in 1973, Fişekspor is based in the Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul and will compete in the 1. Amatör Lig, Group 9, during the 2026/27 season.
The club’s decision to bring Hamzat into its squad comes as it prepares for the new campaign, with the Nigerian expected to compete for a place in an attacking setup where his qualities as a winger can be utilised.
While Fişekspor has not publicly disclosed details such as the financial terms of the deal or the length of Hamzat’s contract, its announcement indicates that the signing forms part of the club’s broader preparations for the season.
That makes the Nigerian’s immediate task straightforward: settle into the squad, adapt to the demands of his new club and demonstrate on the pitch why Fişekspor believes his qualities can help the team.
For a winger coming from Nigeria, the move also provides an opportunity to experience a different style of football and a new competitive environment.
The adjustment will not necessarily be simple.
Hamzat will be entering a new dressing room, working with a new coaching staff and playing alongside teammates from a different football culture. His ability to adapt could therefore be just as important as his technical qualities during the early stages of his Turkish adventure.
But the opportunity itself is significant.
From Lagos to Istanbul
Hamzat’s route to Turkey has been built through a less conventional pathway.
Rather than moving directly from a major professional academy into an established European club, he continued his football development while pursuing his education at LASU and subsequently through grassroots football in Lagos.
That background makes the Fişekspor move an important progression.
His university experience gave him competitive football while he completed his studies, while his time with grassroots teams kept him involved in the game after leaving LASU.
Now he has secured an opportunity to test himself outside Nigeria.
The move also means Hamzat will be entering the 2026/27 campaign with something to prove. Fişekspor’s public comments have placed emphasis on his talent, energy and fighting spirit, and the winger will now have the opportunity to demonstrate those qualities in competitive matches.
For the club, the objective will be to integrate a new attacking option into its squad and get the best from his qualities.
For Hamzat, the objective is more personal.
He will be looking to establish himself, earn regular opportunities and make his first season in Turkish football count.
A successful adaptation could open further doors in a football market that has become increasingly familiar with players from different parts of the world.
For now, however, the focus is Fişekspor.
The Nigerian winger has completed the first major step by securing the move. The next step is to translate the promise that convinced the Istanbul club to sign him into performances on the pitch.
Fişekspor has already welcomed him as part of its family and spoken positively about what he can bring to the team.
The responsibility now shifts to Hamzat.
From the football pitches of Lagos to the university colours of the LASU Trail Blazers and now to Istanbul, the winger has reached another stage of his career.
His Turkish adventure has officially begun, and the 2026/27 season will provide the first opportunity to see what he can produce in his new surroundings.
