EFCC: Udom Emmanuel arrested over alleged N700 Billion fraud

In a recent development, EFCC operatives arrested Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom State’s immediate past governor.

The arrest follows allegations of financial misconduct involving N700 billion during his tenure.

EFCC arrested former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel on Tuesday at its Abuja headquarters after he arrived at 12:30 P.M. to answer an anti-graft agency summons.

Investigators launched the probe following a petition from the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NCAT), a civil society group targeting financial crimes.

Specifically, NCAT accused Emmanuel of laundering money, diverting public funds, and stealing state resources during his 2015–2023 governorship, prompting the agency’s scrutiny.

The petitioner, citing EFCC sources, alleged Emmanuel’s administration obtained N3 trillion from the Federation Account over eight years.

After receiving these funds, the administration accumulated N500 billion debt while leaving N300 billion in unpaid ongoing projects.

Transitioning to financial outcomes, critics argue such fiscal management burdened successor governments despite substantial allocations.

Consequently, unresolved liabilities now overshadow prior infrastructural investments, sparking accountability debates.

The CSO also claims to have audited the financial records of Akwa Ibom State, uncovering what it describes as significant embezzlement of public funds under Emmanuel’s leadership.

The former governor is further accused of being unable to account for N700 billion in state finances. The allegations have raised questions about financial mismanagement and accountability during his administration.

As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement regarding the arrest or the specifics of its investigation.

Efforts to reach Emmanuel’s representatives for a response have so far been unsuccessful.

This development marks another high-profile case in the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.
