An autopsy conducted on the late Nigerian boxer, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who tragically collapsed during a boxing match in Ghana, has confirmed that he d!ed from sudden cardiac arrest.
The 40-year-old former National and West African light-heavyweight champion was in the ring with Accra-born boxer John Mbanugu, popularly known as “Power,” during an undercard bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025, when he suddenly slumped mid-fight.
The referee promptly stopped the match and called for immediate medical assistance.
Despite efforts by medics to revive him, Olanrewaju was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Speaking to newsmen, Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West African Boxing Union, disclosed that preliminary autopsy results pointed to cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
However, he noted that further medical investigations into the boxer’s heart condition are still underway.
“The early post-mortem findings reveal Segun suffered sudden cardiac arrest. However, additional tests are being carried out to better understand his heart condition,”Aboderin stated.
He also mentioned that the boxer’s remains would not be repatriated to Nigeria for burial until approximately two weeks, pending the conclusion of these examinations.
The autopsy was officially carried out on Wednesday, April 2, following a court directive to investigate the circumstances surrounding the athlete’s sudden demise.
