Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development has intensified efforts to reclaim the Okunde Bluewater Scheme near Lekki Coastal Road.
Authorities recently demolished illegal shanties and evicted unauthorized occupants during a targeted enforcement operation.
Leading the initiative, Honourable Commissioner Ekundayo Alebiosu clarified the action builds on last year’s cleanup campaign.
“We cleared this land in late 2023, and encroachments will no longer be tolerated,” he asserted.
Transitioning to stricter measures, he warned that rebuilding makeshift structures would prompt immediate consequences.
Highlighting the risks, Alebiosu emphasized shanties endanger both the environment and public safety.
Furthermore, he stressed these violations clash with Lagos State’s Mega City Master Plan.
“Our vision prioritizes sustainable development, not unregulated settlements,” he added.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to transforming the area into a world-class waterfront community.
Meanwhile, periodic patrols and monitoring systems will safeguard the site from future encroachments.
Alebiosu recalled the Ministry’s 2023 reclamation efforts, vowing to protect progress.
“We won’t allow illegal resettlement to undermine public resources,” he declared.
Additionally, the Ministry aims to align all government-owned waterfronts with global urban standards.
Alebiosu outlined plans for a modern coastal road network to boost connectivity and economic growth.
“Residents deserve infrastructure that reflects Lagos’ status as a mega city,” he noted.
By prioritizing strategic land use, the government seeks to optimize space for communal benefit.
Active enforcement, paired with public awareness campaigns, will deter future violations.
The Ministry also plans community engagements to address housing needs legally.
