PAN raises concern over declining egg consumption

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has expressed concern regarding the country’s declining egg consumption. This decline is alarming because eggs are one of the most nutritious and affordable protein sources available.

Moreover, the association emphasizes the importance of promoting egg consumption to improve dietary health. By increasing awareness of the nutritional benefits of eggs, they hope to encourage more people to include them in their diets.

Industry experts worry this downward trend could worsen malnutrition while farmers struggle with shrinking profit margins.

Middlemen in the distribution chain have come under scrutiny for inflating egg prices beyond reasonable levels. While farms sell crates at N5,500, retailers charge consumers between N6,000 and N6,500 – a markup PAN considers excessive. “This N1,000 difference hurts both farmers and buyers,” explained a PAN representative. “We recommend keeping price increases below N300 per crate.”

Soaring production costs have compounded the problem, with poultry farmers facing steep rises in feed prices, transportation expenses, and farm maintenance. These financial pressures threaten to push small-scale producers out of business while making eggs increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Nigerians struggling with food inflation.

PAN has appealed for fairer pricing structures across the supply chain to maintain egg accessibility.

The association highlights that collaboration among farmers, distributors, and retailers can significantly reduce unnecessary costs. Consequently, this effort keeps essential protein sources accessible for low-income families.

Nutritionists caution that decreasing egg consumption may lead to severe public health issues. Specifically, children and pregnant women depend on eggs for high-quality protein and vital nutrients. Furthermore, as many households cut back on basic food items, rising egg prices exacerbate financial st

The current crisis highlights the urgent need for government intervention to stabilize poultry production costs and regulate distribution margins. Industry leaders stress that immediate action could prevent eggs from becoming a luxury item while protecting farmers’ livelihoods.

As Nigeria faces food insecurity and malnutrition, maintaining affordable egg supplies is crucial. Therefore, PAN actively advocates for policies that support both poultry producers and consumers, ensuring this nutritional powerhouse remains on dinner tables nationwide. Farmers are hopeful that effective solutions will emerge soon, preventing more families from being priced out of buying eggs altogether.

Moreover, the association is committed to finding sustainable solutions through constructive dialogue with all stakeholders. Their ongoing efforts focus on balancing fair profits for farmers while ensuring reasonable prices for consumers. This approach keeps eggs accessible as both a dietary staple and an economic opportunity for Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

With proper intervention, experts believe Nigeria can reverse the consumption decline and harness eggs’ full potential in fighting malnutrition. The coming months will prove crucial for implementing changes that protect both public health and the poultry industry’s future.
