NEMA recovers 115 bodies in Niger’s flood disaster

Following the devastating flood in Kpege, Mokwa, Niger State, NEMA rapidly mobilized resources to aid affected communities.

This disaster has resulted in loss of lives, displacement, and significant damage, prompting a swift response from NEMA and supporting agencies.

On Friday, May 30, 2025, NEMA confirmed that rescue efforts have recovered at least 100 bodies while continuing search and rescue operations.

First, medical teams promptly evacuated the injured to Mokwa health centers, allowing many to receive urgent treatment quickly.
Furthermore, first aid was immediately administered at the scene, which helped stabilize the victims’ conditions effectively.

The epicenters of this catastrophe are Unguwan Hausawa and Tiffin Maza neighborhoods within Mokwa township. Mrs. Zubaida Umar, NEMA’s Director General, led an on-site assessment, highlighting the agency’s commitment to relief and rescue coordination efforts.

 Relief Operations Underway

In response to the tragedy, NEMA activated its Minna Operations Office and deployed additional personnel and equipment from its Headquarters in Abuja. The deployment includes specialized teams led by the Director of Search and Rescue, alongside critical resources such as a Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance, Rapid Intervention Vehicles, Mobile Water Treatment Units, and Extrication equipment.

Emergency relief efforts are ongoing, with NEMA delivering essential supplies to provide temporary shelter and sustenance for displaced persons. The relief materials include assorted food items, household utensils, tents, and clean drinking water produced using mobile water treatment equipment. The items were formally presented to Niger State Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, at the disaster site. The Deputy Governor expressed gratitude for NEMA’s prompt response and commended Mrs. Umar’s personal involvement in overseeing operations.

 Collaborative Rescue Efforts

Search and rescue teams from NEMA’s Minna Operations Office and Abuja Headquarters continue to work alongside the Nigerian Red Cross Society, local volunteers, and divers to locate survivors and recover bodies. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Military Disaster Response Units (DRUs) from the nearby Kainji military formation, are providing critical support. Their efforts include life-saving operations, crowd control, and ensuring the safety of survivors and emergency responders.

The dedication of rescue teams has been lauded by NEMA officials. “We commend the tireless efforts of all personnel involved in this operation,” said Mrs. Umar. “Their bravery and commitment are making a significant difference in this challenging situation.”

NEMA has urged residents of Mokwa and surrounding areas to remain vigilant for potential secondary hazards.
