Senate Scraps Customs Governing Body; Now To Confirm CG Appointment

Published

on

Senate on Wednesday scrapped the governing Board of the Nigerian Customs Service; replacing it with the establishment of the Nigerian Customs Commission.

This even as the appointment of Customs Controller-General is subjected to Senate confirmation.

Senate decision was sequel to clause by clause consideration and passage of a bill to repeal and re-enacts Nigerian Customs Service Management Act 2017. ‎

The bill contains 16 Penal Clauses; one of which recommended varied punishments from dismissal to imprisonment for Customs officers who violate the provisions.

‎The Governing Board which has at its helm of affairs Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, oversees the activities of Customs.

When the law becomes operational; the Governing Board would give way for the new commission to be established.

‎The bill prescribes the use of pre-shipment and post-shipment inspection, meaning tha‎t all ships and vessels coming into Nigeria must be thoroughly inspected from country of origin to the port of destination.

The Customs would however be required to outsource the technology required for effective inspection.
