The rowdiness that trailed the amendment of the Electoral Act shows that all is not well with the Red Chamber as an institution.
There is insinuation that the leadership of the Senate hijacked the process, thereby passing the amended act without majority input to the debate.
It was a wild drama on the 14th February 2018 at the upper chamber of the national assembly. When the Senates tried to change the INEC Elections Timetable. Federal Law makers elections first, then State Law makers/Governors with the last being the Presidential elections.
10 Senators under the leadership of Abdullahi Adamu left the chamber to addressed the press while the plenary was still on. The 10 senators are:
Abdullahi Adamu APC Nas-State.
Ovie-Agege APC Delta State.
Binta Garba APC Adamawa State.
Ali Wakili APC Bauchi State.
Kurfi Umar APC Katsina State.
Andrew Uchendu APC River’s.Abdullahi Danbaba Katsina State.
Benjamin Uwajumogu Imo State.
The leader of the group of Senators Abdullahi Adamu questioned the conduct of the Senate President, Saraki in the passage process.
We believe the process was rushed, there is no need to rush the bill. Give every one the opportunity. There is no reason for two people to speak on the issue. It is not the tradition of the Senate.
Abdullahi Adamu alleged that the process was predetermined as even the Chairman of the committee on INEC did not signed the report.
Why do we want to make a law that address on a particular issue targeted at one person?
In the words of an analyst with Elombah.com, Chrisco, this is very partisan, you could see from the body language, from the utterances that it is a predetermined thing by a political party that is threatened by the APC government. This can not stand.
The speculations that the Senate President is about to hijack Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is still yet to be seen.
