Guinness Beer impounded by CPC over alleged food poisoning

CPC impounded about 70 cartons of unwholesome expired Guinness alcoholic beverage drinks from a warehouse in Awka over alleged food poisoning

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) on Sunday afternoon impounded about 70 cartons of unwholesome expired Guinness alcoholic beverage drinks.

The drinks were impounded from a warehouse located at Awba-Ofemmili, a rural farming community in Awka North LGA of Anambra state.

CPC had alleged food poisoning after taking the Guinness drink from the distributor.

According to her, “a complainant, Mr Ikechukwu Nnajidenma and his friends experienced severe purging and vomiting which made them to look at the bottles to find out that the drinks had expired.

“Immediately, we visited the warehouse of Eddinho Nig. Ltd with policemen and discovered that 69 and half cartons of the Guinness drinks had since expired. 

“So we quickly took custody of them”.

She noted that the CPC had commenced investigations to ascertain the actual source of the expired products being sold to unsuspecting members of the public.

She, therefore, advised the people to be mindful of the expiry dates on any processed foods and drinks before consuming or using them.

The Zonal Coordinator confirmed that the recovered items alongside other expired and unwholesome so far recovered would soon be destroyed publicly.

“Our job, she added, “is to eliminate hazardous products from the market and address consumers’ Complaints amicably through investigation, mediation and conciliation.”
