BREAKING: Court denies IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, ors bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has, on Thursday, denied the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB] and director of Radio Biara, Nnamdi Kanu and two others bail.

Kanu was charged alongside two others, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi in a six-count charge of treason and managing the affairs of ‘an unlawful society.’

All the accused persons had denied the accusation of treasonable felony, which attracts a life sentence, and applied for bail.

In her ruling, the judge, Justice Binta Nyako says the charges against the accused constituted a threat to national security and thus they cannot be granted bail.

Nyako is the third judge to handle the case following the withdrawal of two previous judges.

The government is accusing Kanu of plotting to split Nigeria, by creating a Biafra Republic with southeast, south south states, and parts of Kogi and Benue states, as component units.

His lawyers had earlier this year, said the Biafra leader was open to negotiations with the federal government.

The lawyers, however, said such negotiations can only take place after he is released from incarceration.

The lawyers also made it clear that he is not part of the bargaining chip of either the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) or the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

Both groups demanded for Kanu’s release as part of their own negotiations with the federal government.
