Chelsea legend warns Sanchez will fail in crucial big moments

(DDM) – Former Premier League star Troy Deeney has issued a strong warning about Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez ahead of the new season.

Deeney said he remains “seriously worried” that the Spaniard will make costly errors when the Blues need him most.

He made the comments while speaking on talkSPORT before Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.

Sanchez had earlier impressed during Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph but drew criticism after conceding a near-post goal against AC Milan in pre-season.

According to Deeney, the goal was a clear sign of poor positioning and decision-making.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had considered replacing Sanchez in the summer with AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The transfer talks collapsed when Chelsea refused to pay the £20 million asking price.

Instead, the club focused on signing attacking talents Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Jamie Gittens.

Deeney warned that these signings could backfire if the defensive issues remain unresolved.

He noted that Sanchez’s history shows a tendency to “let you down in big moments.”

Last season, Sanchez lost his place to Filip Jorgensen but regained it after Jorgensen’s own inconsistent form.

Despite the goalkeeper’s optimism following the Club World Cup win over PSG, Deeney remains unconvinced.

The former striker also highlighted the absence of defender Levi Colwill as a major setback for Chelsea.

However, he believes the return of Wesley Fofana could strengthen the defence — but only if the player remains fit.

Deeney described Fofana as one of the best centre-backs in world football when available.

Sanchez, 27, has expressed confidence about Chelsea’s future under Maresca’s leadership.

He pointed to the youth of the squad, saying they will become a “solid squad” capable of dominating in years to come.

Chelsea scouts are already monitoring potential goalkeeping reinforcements in Spain and Germany ahead of the January window.

For now, the club’s focus is on a strong Premier League start while questions over Sanchez’s reliability persist.
