(DDM) – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria, ending days of speculation over his health and whereabouts.
Akpabio arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, around 4am on Monday.
He was received at the presidential wing by senators, aides, and supporters who gathered to welcome him.
The Senate President had earlier attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, between July 29 and July 31.
After the event, his silence and absence from public view sparked rumours on social media about his health.
Several online platforms claimed he was critically ill and hospitalised in Europe, fuelling public concern.
Speaking with journalists on arrival, Akpabio dismissed the speculation as unfounded and politically motivated.
“There’s nothing like such. I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation,” he said.
His denial comes amid growing scrutiny of political leaders who often seek medical treatment abroad.
Critics argue that such frequent foreign trips highlight the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
DDM gathered that Akpabio’s allies have accused opposition elements of spreading falsehoods to weaken his political standing.
His camp insists he remains strong, active, and fully focused on his duties in the Senate.
Observers, however, say his quiet absence created a vacuum that encouraged speculation to spiral online.
Nigeria’s political atmosphere has been marked by persistent rumours about the health of top officials.
Past presidents, ministers, and lawmakers have faced similar controversies when they travelled abroad for undisclosed reasons.
For many Nigerians, transparency about the health of elected officials remains a sensitive but unresolved issue.
Analysts note that such rumours often gain traction due to lack of timely official communication.
Akpabio’s quick dismissal of the claims may settle speculation temporarily but does not erase public scepticism.
He is expected to resume legislative duties immediately, with key national issues awaiting Senate deliberation.
The development once again reflects the tension between political narratives and public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
