Soludo reveals FG refusal to refund Anambra road construction funds

(DDM) – Governor Chukwuma Soludo has disclosed that the Federal Government has declined to reimburse Anambra State for funds spent on rehabilitating a major federal road network.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Soludo made this revelation during a statewide broadcast on Wednesday, marking the 34th anniversary of Anambra’s creation.

Speaking at the Light House in Awka, Soludo emphasised that the lack of reimbursement would not hinder his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development.

The governor maintained that the state government undertook the reconstruction of the Amawbia–Nise–Agulu–Ekwulobia–Uga federal road despite knowing that compensation might never come.

According to him, the decision was guided by long-term planning for Anambra’s future rather than immediate financial concerns.

He projected that by 2070, Anambra’s population could rise to about 35 million people, making early infrastructural development critical to future mobility and economic expansion.

“That road should have been done 60 years ago, but it was neglected,” Soludo explained.

He said his administration aims to dualise most major roads, given the state’s small landmass and increasing population density.

Soludo stressed that even if federal reimbursement never comes, the real value lies in the daily use of these roads by Anambra residents.

The governor described his leadership approach as one focused on sustainable growth rather than short-term political gestures.

He said his government’s “stomach infrastructure” policy differs from conventional practices of distributing cash or favours to a few individuals.

Instead, Soludo explained that his administration’s model redirects public funds into social programmes, including free education and free antenatal care, to ease household financial burdens.

He argued that such policies put money back in the hands of citizens more effectively than political patronage systems.

Reflecting on the state’s progress since its creation, Soludo credited previous administrations for maintaining an upward trajectory in development.

He listed past governors, including Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Chris Ngige, Peter Obi, and Willie Obiano, as contributors to Anambra’s steady rise.

Soludo emphasised that his own administration prioritises investment-driven development to create long-term value rather than catering to short-term demands.

He insisted that the state’s limited resources must be channelled into strategic projects that will benefit millions rather than a privileged few.
