Airstrike kills Houthi prime minister, deepening Yemen conflict

(DDM) – An Israeli airstrike has killed Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahawi, prime minister of Yemen’s Houthi-led government, along with several senior ministers.

The strike occurred on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in the historic Beit Baws district of Sanaa, targeting a government workshop assessing the administration’s performance over the past year.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the meeting also coincided with a televised address by the Houthi leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, an event that reportedly brought top officials together, presenting a rare opportunity for Israeli intelligence to strike.

Strategic impact on Houthi leadership

Security experts believe the airstrike delivered one of the most significant blows to the Houthis since the escalation of hostilities in 2023.

Multiple ministers—including those handling foreign affairs, justice, economy, agriculture, and information—were also killed, along with members of the prime minister’s cabinet staff.

Analysts describe the operation as a “calculated decapitation” of the group’s governing structure, sending a strong signal that senior leaders are no longer beyond reach.

Regional implications

The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been engaged in escalating hostilities with Israel and its allies since late 2023, when they began launching missile and drone attacks—including cluster munitions—at Israeli territory and Red Sea shipping lanes.

In retaliation, Israeli forces, often with U.S. backing, have carried out precision strikes targeting the group’s infrastructure, weapon storage sites, and now its political leadership.

Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Mohammad Nasser al-Atifi vowed revenge, stating the group was “ready at all levels to confront the US-backed Zionist enemy.”

Leadership transition and future outlook

Rahawi, who had served as prime minister since August 2024, was regarded as a key political figure but not part of the group’s inner military leadership.

His deputy, Mohamed Ahmad Ahmad Miftah, has been named acting prime minister as the group pledges continued resistance against Israeli forces.

Analysts warn the strike could escalate the conflict, drawing in regional powers and threatening critical Red Sea trade routes, heightening fears of a wider crisis.
