Shock gripped Kofar Dawanau Quarters in Kano on Thursday when a 30-year-old man allegedly stabbed his grandparents to death after a dispute over food.
The suspect, identified as Mutawakilu Ibrahim, was said to have attacked his 75-year-old grandfather, Muhammad Dansokoto, and his 65-year-old grandmother, Hadiza Tasidi, around 9:30 a.m.
According to the Kano State Police Command, the case was first reported by a concerned resident to the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters. Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed that the incident stemmed from a food-related disagreement.
“During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a knife to stab both victims in various parts of their bodies, causing severe injuries,” Kiyawa stated.
The elderly couple was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, but doctors confirmed them dead on arrival.
Their remains were later released to the family for burial according to Islamic rites.
Police investigations further revealed that Ibrahim was under the influence of intoxicants when he committed the crime.
Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
The incident has left residents of the community in shock, with many describing the killings as “unthinkable and heartbreaking.”
