North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the launch of a missile reportedly equipped with artificial intelligence technology that can alter its flight path at low altitude.
The missile was launched early Saturday from an area near the eastern coastal city of Wonsan and travelled more than 700 kilometres, according to South Korea’s military.
North Korean state media said the test involved a hypersonic strategic weapon system and was attended by Kim, his wife Ri Sol Ju and their daughter, Ju Ae.
Kim said the launch demonstrated the capabilities of North Korea’s strategic missile forces and their readiness to respond to perceived threats.
North Korean state media also said the missile’s AI technology allows it to change its flight orbit at low altitude, making it more difficult to intercept.
The launch came days after South Korea demanded an apology from Pyongyang over an explosion in the Demilitarised Zone that injured three South Korean soldiers.
North Korea has denied responsibility for the explosion and criticised Seoul’s calls for renewed dialogue.
The latest missile test adds to tensions between the two Koreas as South Korea continues to seek engagement with Pyongyang while North Korea maintains its focus on developing advanced weapons systems.
