Ugandan activist and politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was shot in the leg by police in Bulindo, Kira Municipality, on September 3, 2024.

Wine, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East, was en route to visit one of his lawyers when the incident occurred.

According to a statement on Bobi Wine’s Facebook page, the police and military, under the command of one Twesigye, surrounded Wine’s vehicles and began firing live bullets, teargas canisters, and other projectiles.

The attack resulted in Wine being hit in the leg, and he was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

The statement described the incident as “another attempt on the life of our leader by the regime of President Yoweri Museveni.”

However, the Uganda Police Force released a statement saying it would investigate the matter to verify the facts.

According to the police, he was invited to a Thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District, and participated in the celebration, which concluded peacefully.

The police claim that when Wine left the venue, he and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession, which the police advised against.

Despite their guidance, Wine insisted on proceeding, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.

During the altercation, Wine allegedly sustained injuries, with the police claiming he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury. Wine and his team, however, assert that he was shot.

The police have launched an investigation to clarify the facts surrounding the incident.
