Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has convicted the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for committing terrorism-related offences.
The court, in a ruling delivered on Thursday, held Kanu guilty on counts one and two of the seven-count charge filed against him by the Federal Government. Justice Omotosho ruled that Kanu’s repeated broadcasts, in which he allegedly issued threats of violence, killings and sit-at-home directives across the South-East, amounted to acts of terrorism under Nigerian law.
The judge said the prosecution established that the sit-at-home orders and inciting statements contributed to widespread fear, disruptions, and violent incidents recorded in parts of the region.
Following the pronouncement, the court proceeded to address count three of the charge.
