American tactician Randy Waldrum has tendered his resignation as the head coach of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national football team.
The 67-year-old cited his wife’s health issues as the reason for his departure.
Part of the letter reads, “it’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that.
“After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons.
“This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”
Waldrum, who was appointed in 2020, led the team to tournaments including the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympics in Paris where the team crashed out in the group stage.
Waldrum had blamed the country’s dismal performance in Paris on poor preparation stemming from lack of support by the country’s football federation.
His resignation comes amid the Nigeria Football Federation’s ongoing search for a substantive coach for the Super Eagles. Ex-international Augustine Eguavoen is currently holding sway as Interim Head Coach of the national team.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to comment on Waldrum’s departure or the search for his replacement but Diaspora Digital Media understands that Waldrum had duly submitted his resignation letter to the Federation on Thursday evening.
