Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed concerns over England’s placement in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

DDM notes that Ferdinand believes both Ghana and Croatia will present significant challenges to the Three Lions despite England being favored to progress.

Speaking to GOAL, Ferdinand admitted he was not pleased with the draw, emphasizing that the group is tougher than he would have liked.

He said that ideally, teams prefer an “easier runway” in the group stage to secure qualification without facing early high-intensity contests.

Ferdinand highlighted Croatia, led by veteran midfielder Luka Modric, as a particularly strong opponent capable of creating difficulties for England.

He also pointed out Ghana’s consistent quality in international competitions, noting that the Black Stars will be no easy match.

According to Ferdinand, Panama is likely the weaker side of the group and one that England should comfortably beat.

Despite his concerns, Ferdinand remains confident in England’s ability to win the group and advance to the knockout stages.

He said, “I still back us to win the group and get out of the group, but I would have liked to see a slightly easier path.”

Ferdinand’s assessment underscores the competitive balance in Group L, which includes the 1996 World Cup winners England, 2018 runners-up Croatia, and the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League champions Panama.

Ghana, with its strong history in World Cup competitions, is expected to test England’s tactical discipline, fitness, and squad depth.

The Three Lions will play their first group match against Panama on June 17, 2026, at Toronto Stadium before traveling to Boston to face England’s familiar rival, Croatia, on June 23.

They will conclude the group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27, 2026.

Football analysts note that Ferdinand’s warning highlights the importance of preparation, squad rotation, and mental readiness for England as they navigate a challenging group stage.

Ghana’s athleticism and tactical organization, combined with Croatia’s technical excellence, will require England to perform at their highest level from the very first match.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, England’s squad, led by experienced players and emerging talents, will need to balance ambition with caution to secure top position in Group L.

The group’s competitive nature suggests that no team can afford complacency, and Ferdinand’s prediction serves as a reminder that surprises are always possible in the global tournament.
