Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement to Resume in January – Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume the nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns across the country.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the police, the decision followed a review of the increasing use of vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass in the commission of crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent offences.

The Force noted that criminals had taken advantage of the earlier suspension of enforcement to conceal their identities, making it necessary to resume enforcement as a proactive security measure.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public of the planned resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court,” the statement said.

It added that the decision was taken after careful consideration of emerging security challenges and the need to safeguard lives and property nationwide.

The police clarified that no court order currently restrains the Force from enforcing the tinted glass law, explaining that enforcement was previously suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation in the interest of transparency and public convenience.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally and with full respect for citizens’ rights, in line with existing laws and the rule of law.

Motorists who require tinted glass for legitimate reasons were advised to apply for permits through approved channels and ensure compliance ahead of the enforcement date.

The Force recalled that enforcement of the policy was suspended on October 9, 2025, following discussions between the IGP and a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, to address public concerns surrounding enforcement practices.

Enforcement had earlier been scheduled for August 11, 2025, before being shifted to October 2, 2025. The issuance of tinted glass permits was initially suspended in June 2022 to curb criminal abuse.

In February 2024, the police announced plans to resume issuance under a digital permit system, featuring QR codes, unique serial numbers and digital holograms to prevent forgery.

Applications are processed exclusively through www.possap.gov.ng, with applicants required to provide NIN and TIN details, biometric data and undergo background checks. Approved permits are issued digitally within 72 hours
