(DDM) – Grammy-winning musician Burna Boy and social commentator Otse Vincent, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), visited the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos, over the weekend.

DDM gathered that the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) hosted the duo to brief them on procedures for facilitating the release of inmates who are eligible for discharge but unable to pay fines.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Osho Onimisi Joseph, explained that the visit provided Burna Boy and VDM with firsthand insight into the legal and administrative processes that govern inmate release under existing laws and correctional regulations.

Sources said the visit is part of a collaborative effort aimed at easing the burden on indigent inmates, especially those detained solely due to financial constraints. The initiative allows well-meaning citizens, including public figures, to contribute to the justice system by settling fines on behalf of eligible prisoners.

The duo expressed their commitment to supporting the initiative, emphasizing the need for social responsibility and the role of prominent Nigerians in improving correctional outcomes. Their involvement has been widely welcomed by the public, with many hailing it as a compassionate intervention for vulnerable inmates.

Officials confirmed that the funds provided by Burna Boy and VDM will directly cover fines and administrative fees, enabling the immediate release of qualified prisoners in line with the law.

The NCoS reiterated that such partnerships help foster rehabilitation, reduce prison congestion, and reinforce the principle that justice should not be contingent on financial capacity.

Observers noted that this collaboration could set a precedent for more celebrities and influential individuals to participate in correctional support initiatives nationwide, promoting fairness and equity in the legal system.

The visit also included tours of the facility, during which the duo interacted with staff and some inmates, gaining a deeper understanding of daily operations and challenges faced by the correctional service.

The Lagos State NCoS emphasized that the program aligns with broader efforts to modernize correctional services, encourage reintegration, and ensure that indigent inmates are not unfairly penalized due to poverty.

This gesture by Burna Boy and VDM has sparked national conversation on the role of civic engagement in the justice sector and the need for collaborative solutions to systemic issues in Nigerian prisons.
