FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has reacted to recent reports of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the governor is free to make political moves without seeking his clearance.

Speaking on Sunday, Wike emphasized that while he has a long-standing political partnership with Fubara, the governor’s decision to switch parties is entirely his own prerogative.

DDM gathered that the minister used the opportunity to call for unity and calm within the Rivers political landscape, urging all actors to respect personal political choices.

Wike recalled his commitment to maintaining peace and political stability in the state, noting that personal disagreements should not overshadow governance priorities. He also highlighted that political defection is a common feature in Nigeria’s multi-party system, which allows politicians the freedom to align with parties that reflect their interests and ambitions.

The FCT Minister, however, stressed that while Fubara is free to join APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a formidable force in Rivers State and across Nigeria. Wike noted that his focus continues to be on strengthening PDP structures, ensuring grassroots mobilization, and preparing for the 2027 elections.

“This is Nigeria, and every politician has the right to make decisions that align with their political philosophy and future aspirations,” Wike said.

He also warned that unnecessary politicking or attempts to cast aspersions on his influence could distract from the more pressing issues of development, governance, and youth empowerment. According to him, Rivers State has significant projects underway, and political realignments should not derail ongoing progress.

Observers note that Fubara’s defection comes at a sensitive time, with the APC seeking to consolidate its influence ahead of key elections. While some political analysts view the move as a strategic step by the governor to expand his political reach, others interpret it as a potential challenge to Wike’s influence within the state.

Wike concluded by reiterating his belief in democratic principles, emphasizing that loyalty cannot be forced, and political freedom must be respected. He encouraged all political leaders in Rivers State to engage in issue-based politics and avoid unnecessary confrontations.

The minister’s statement is expected to settle speculation about his personal approval being required for Fubara’s defection, signaling a clear separation between political allegiance and administrative endorsement.

As the Rivers political scene continues to evolve, stakeholders are closely monitoring how Fubara’s move will impact both state and national political calculations, particularly in relation to upcoming elections and inter-party dynamics.
