ABUJA, Nigeria — The Labour Party has unveiled Hajia Bintu Konto, a veteran nurse and public health specialist, as its vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, completing the party’s ticket alongside its presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, made the announcement on Saturday in Abuja, describing Konto as a public health expert and humanitarian leader with over 30 years of experience in healthcare delivery, community development, and humanitarian intervention.
Konto retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in several leadership roles, including Community and Government Liaison Officer. She worked extensively in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States, coordinating response and mobilisation efforts for internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups.
A trained nurse, midwife, and public health specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and has lectured in Community Health. She currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria and is the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
Fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani, and Bura, Konto has led engagements with government, traditional institutions, and civil society on health, nutrition, WASH, and humanitarian programmes.
The Labour Party said her nomination underscores its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity, and competent leadership from across the country. “With Hajja Konto, the ticket brings compassion, administrative experience and a clear grasp of Nigeria’s development challenges, especially for women, children and communities affected by insecurity,” the party stated.
The Okereke/Konto ticket represents “a new generation of purposeful, people-centred leadership” focused on restoring hope, strengthening institutions, reviving the economy, and improving security.
The announcement comes as the Labour Party seeks to reposition itself following the departure of Peter Obi, who left the party in January 2026 to join the African Democratic Congress. Obi’s former running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, had previously declared his presidential ambition on the LP platform, stating he would not follow Obi’s trajectory.
The Labour Party has urged Nigerians to support the ticket ahead of the 2027 polls.
