The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially rejected the impeachment proceedings launched against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
In a statement on Thursday, the APC’s State Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, described the developments in the Rivers State House of Assembly as “unfortunate” and warned against allowing past political conflicts to influence the party’s administration.
“The attention of the leadership of the APC in Rivers State has been drawn to the latest unfortunate developments within the chambers of the House of Assembly. We concede that the legislature is an independent arm of government with the constitutional responsibility of checks and balances; however, we solemnly reject the resort to impeachment against our Governor and his Deputy,” the statement read.
Budgetary Dispute Clarification
The APC also addressed claims linking the impeachment to budgetary issues, calling them legally and factually baseless. Nwauju outlined the state’s budget timeline, noting that under a six-month emergency rule in May 2025, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly, approved by the Senate in June, and finally ratified by the House of Representatives.
“This budget is designed to run for one full year, ending in August 2026,” Nwauju said. “If the Governor is satisfied with this composition, he is not obligated to present a supplementary budget. Furthermore, the Constitution allows a six-month spending window into the new fiscal year.”
The APC called on all members of the State House of Assembly, especially party members, to immediately halt the impeachment process, warning that continuing the proceedings could harm the party’s image and impede the state’s development.
