(DDM) – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government and the National Assembly to restoring peace and stability across Nigeria, amid persistent security challenges confronting the nation.

Akpabio gave the assurance while speaking at a national event organised to honour Nigeria’s fallen heroes, stressing that both arms of government remain resolute in their determination to build a safer and more united country.

He said the sacrifices of fallen security personnel and national heroes would not be in vain, noting that their courage continues to inspire renewed efforts by the government to confront insecurity and violence.

According to the Senate President, peace remains the foundation upon which economic development, national unity, and democratic governance can thrive, adding that Nigeria’s current challenges demand collective responsibility rather than blame.
Akpabio stated that the Federal Government, working closely with the National Assembly, has continued to provide legislative backing, policy direction, and budgetary support to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
He explained that lawmakers are committed to passing laws that empower security agencies, improve intelligence gathering, and enhance coordination among military and paramilitary institutions.

The Senate President also emphasised that honouring fallen heroes goes beyond ceremonial events, insisting it must reflect in concrete actions that protect lives, communities, and national assets.

He noted that insecurity, banditry, terrorism, and communal violence have inflicted deep wounds on the country, but expressed confidence that sustained collaboration between the executive, legislature, and security agencies would yield positive results.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to support government initiatives aimed at restoring peace, warning that division, misinformation, and political exploitation of security issues only worsen the situation.

He also called for unity among citizens, stressing that national peace is a shared responsibility that transcends political affiliation, ethnicity, and religion.

The Senate President praised members of the armed forces and security services for their dedication, acknowledging the risks they face daily in defending the country.

He assured families of fallen heroes that the government remains committed to their welfare, including compensation, recognition, and long-term support.

Akpabio further highlighted the role of the National Assembly in oversight, stating that lawmakers would continue to hold relevant agencies accountable to ensure resources allocated for security are properly utilised.

Political analysts note that Akpabio’s remarks come at a time when public confidence in Nigeria’s security framework is under intense scrutiny, with many citizens questioning the pace and effectiveness of government responses.

While the assurances were welcomed by some stakeholders, critics argue that repeated commitments must translate into measurable improvements on the ground to restore public trust.

Civil society groups have repeatedly called on the government to match rhetoric with decisive action, especially in regions plagued by violence and displacement.

Despite the criticism, Akpabio maintained that progress is being made, pointing to ongoing reforms and increased inter-agency cooperation as signs of renewed momentum.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to honour fallen heroes by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, describing unity as Nigeria’s most powerful weapon against insecurity.

As the nation continues to grapple with complex security threats, the promise of peace by the Federal Government and National Assembly remains a central focus in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for stability and national renewal.
