The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, has denied allegations of negligence following the death of singer Ifunanya Nwagene, popularly known as Nanyah, who reportedly died after suffering complications from a snake bite.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the hospital said its medical team made efforts to save the singer’s life, insisting that claims circulating on social media suggesting poor treatment or lack of anti-snake venom were false.

“Our team of professionals worked diligently to provide CPR and other life-saving measures; however, despite these efforts, we were unable to revive her,” the statement said.

According to FMC, doctors quickly assessed the patient and determined she had developed severe neurotoxic complications arising from the snake bite.

The hospital said plans were already underway to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when her condition suddenly deteriorated.

“Despite all efforts to stabilise her condition and transfer her to the ICU for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer,” the hospital said.

FMC added that medical staff administered treatment including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and polyvalent snake antivenom.

The hospital maintained that the singer’s death was caused by the severity of the neurotoxic complications, not negligence or the alleged absence of antivenom.

It also expressed condolences to the Nwagene family, describing the incident as a painful loss, while reaffirming its commitment to transparency and quality patient care.

“We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily. The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation,” the statement added.
