Outrage as Zamfara Allocates ₦1bn to Build Ultramodern Cemeteries, Amid Insecurity

The Zamfara State Government has earmarked ₦1 billion in its 2026 budget for the construction of ultramodern cemeteries across the state’s 14 local government areas, a decision that has generated intense public debate amid ongoing security challenges.

The allocation, listed under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, is part of the state’s approved 2026 budget and is intended to provide modern burial facilities to meet what officials describe as a growing need for dignified interment spaces.

Zamfara, located in Nigeria’s North West, has in recent years remained one of the country’s most insecurity-affected states, with frequent attacks by armed groups often referred to locally as bandits.

These attacks have resulted in numerous deaths, mass displacements and widespread humanitarian challenges, particularly in rural communities.

Recent incidents include reported killings in Kyaram community, where at least five people were ambushed, and in Gwargwaba village in Bungudu Local Government Area, where four residents were killed in late January 2025.

Such attacks have contributed to recurring mass burials and heightened pressure on communities and local authorities.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration described the 2026 fiscal plan as a “Budget of Stability and Growth.”

The budget, initially proposed at ₦861.337 billion and later signed into law with slight adjustments, places emphasis on capital expenditure, which accounts for about 83 per cent of the total spending.

Key sectoral allocations include ₦87 billion for health, ₦86 billion for agriculture and ₦65 billion for education.

The government has also highlighted provisions aimed at strengthening security, improving infrastructure, modernising agriculture and expanding access to social services.

Despite these allocations, the ₦1 billion set aside for cemetery construction has drawn widespread criticism, particularly on social media, where many residents and commentators questioned the timing and priority of the expenditure.

Critics argue that the funds could be better directed toward security-related interventions such as intelligence gathering, community policing, surveillance technology and support for security agencies to prevent further loss of life.

Others have raised concerns about unmet needs in healthcare, education and food security, suggesting that resources should be channelled toward addressing immediate humanitarian and developmental challenges.

As of the time of reporting, the Zamfara State Government has not issued a detailed public explanation specifically addressing the cemetery allocation.

Officials have, however, reiterated that the overall budget prioritises security enhancement, social welfare and economic development.

The ₦1 billion provision for ultramodern cemeteries has since become a focal point in public discourse, highlighting broader questions about governance priorities, resource allocation and the ongoing struggle to restore peace and stability in Zamfara State.
