Today, October 1, 2024, marks a historic milestone as Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, becomes the first American President to reach the century mark, celebrating his 100th birthday.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s life has been defined by his dedication to making the world a better place.

As President, he championed human rights, advanced democracy, and promoted economic and social development, earning him the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.

His presidency, though marked by challenges, was characterized by notable achievements in domestic and foreign affairs.

*Domestic Achievements

Carter’s administration tackled the energy crisis by establishing a national energy policy and deregulating domestic petroleum prices.

He also implemented civil service reform, improved government efficiency, and expanded the national park system, protecting 103 million acres of Alaskan lands.

Additionally, he created the Department of Education and bolstered the Social Security system.

*Foreign Policy Milestones

In foreign affairs, Carter brokered the historic Camp David Accords, bringing peace between Egypt and Israel.

He established full diplomatic relations with China and negotiated the SALT II nuclear limitation treaty with the Soviet Union.

Though faced with setbacks, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iran hostage crisis, Carter remained committed to diplomacy.

*A Legacy of Peace

Beyond his presidency, Carter’s legacy extends through his tireless advocacy for human rights, democracy, and social justice.

The Carter Center, founded in 1982, continues to promote peace, health, and democracy globally.
