(DDM) – Veteran England defender Kyle Walker has officially announced his retirement from international football, ending a distinguished career with the England national team after more than a decade of service.

Walker confirmed that he would step away from representing England national football team with immediate effect following a career that produced 96 international appearances.

The 35-year-old defender leaves the international stage after participating in several major tournaments and playing a key role in England’s modern football era.

Walker currently plays club football for Burnley F.C., where he operates as a full-back and continues his professional career at domestic level.

His final appearance for England came in June 2025 during a friendly match against Senegal national football team at the City Ground.

Reflecting on the decision, Walker said it was an emotional moment to close a long chapter of his football career.

He described his time with England as a remarkable journey filled with pride and unforgettable experiences.

Walker also said the decision to retire from international duty gives him a sense of closure after years of representing his country.

The defender first appeared for England in November 2011 during a match against Spain national football team.

His debut marked the beginning of a long international career that saw him become one of England’s most dependable defenders.

Before becoming a national team regular, Walker developed his club career with several prominent English teams.

He played for Sheffield United F.C. early in his professional journey.

Walker later gained wider recognition during his time at Tottenham Hotspur F.C..

His career reached new heights when he joined Manchester City F.C., where he became part of one of Europe’s most successful club squads.

During his international career, Walker represented England in two FIFA World Cups.

He featured in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and again in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He also played in three UEFA European Championship tournaments.

These included UEFA Euro 2016, UEFA Euro 2020 and UEFA Euro 2024.

Walker played a major role in England’s journey to back-to-back European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024.

His defensive consistency made him one of the most trusted players in the national squad.

The defender’s performances earned him recognition at continental level.

Walker was selected in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament at both European Championship competitions.

During the 2024 campaign, he also served as vice-captain of the England squad.

Despite his vast experience, Walker was omitted from the most recent England squad announced by manager Thomas Tuchel.

Football analysts believe that omission signaled a shift toward younger players in the national team setup.

Shortly afterward, Walker decided it was the right time to end his international career.

Over the course of his England career, Walker scored one international goal.

That goal came during a match against Ukraine national football team in September 2023.

According to him, playing for England naturally carries expectations, but players must embrace that responsibility.

He added that national team players are privileged to represent their country on the global stage.

Football observers say Walker leaves behind a legacy as one of England’s most reliable modern defenders.

His pace, defensive awareness, and leadership made him a key figure in England’s resurgence in international tournaments.

With his international chapter now closed, Walker will focus on the remaining years of his club career while leaving behind a significant contribution to England’s football history.
