(DDM) – The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has hosted members of the Muslim community in the state for an Iftar gathering, calling for stronger unity and peaceful coexistence among residents.
The event, held during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, brought together Muslim leaders, community representatives, and government officials in a symbolic gesture of religious harmony.
What happened at the gathering
During the Iftar event, Chukwuma Soludo joined Muslim faithful in breaking their daily fast, a tradition observed by Muslims worldwide throughout Ramadan.
Iftar refers to the meal eaten by Muslims at sunset to break their fast after a day of abstaining from food and drink.
The governor used the occasion to emphasise the importance of mutual respect among different religious and ethnic groups living in Anambra State.
Message of unity and inclusion
Speaking during the event, Chukwuma Soludo stressed that the diversity of the state should be viewed as a source of strength rather than division.
He urged residents to continue promoting peace, tolerance, and cooperation regardless of religious affiliation.
According to him, a stable and united society is necessary for sustainable development and progress.
Muslim community reaction
Leaders of the Muslim community in Anambra State reportedly welcomed the governor’s gesture.
They described the invitation as a sign of inclusivity and a demonstration of the government’s willingness to engage with all communities.
Some community representatives said the event helped strengthen trust and collaboration between the government and minority religious groups in the state.
Religious diversity in Anambra
Although Anambra State is predominantly Christian, it is also home to smaller Muslim communities involved in commerce, education, and public service.
Interfaith gatherings such as Iftar meetings have increasingly been used by political and community leaders to encourage peaceful coexistence.
Analysts say such gestures can help reduce tensions and foster understanding between different religious groups.
Broader significance
Across Nigeria, religious harmony remains an important issue in national discussions about unity and stability.
Political leaders often use religious and cultural events to promote dialogue and strengthen community relationships.
Observers say the Iftar hosted by Chukwuma Soludo reflects a broader effort by leaders to emphasise inclusiveness and unity within their states.
As the fasting period of Ramadan continues, the governor encouraged residents of Anambra State to remain committed to peace, solidarity, and cooperation across religious lines.
