(DDM) – An alleged robbery suspect narrowly escaped death after an angry mob attacked him at a busy market in Enugu following accusations that he was involved in armed robbery.
The incident occurred when traders and residents reportedly discovered the suspect in possession of a stolen pump-action gun at the market.
How the incident happened
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect was apprehended by members of the public at a popular market area in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State.
Traders reportedly raised an alarm after noticing suspicious behaviour and allegedly discovering a pump-action firearm believed to have been stolen.
The discovery quickly triggered anger among people in the market, leading to a mob attack on the suspect.
Several individuals reportedly beat the man while accusing him of being involved in robbery operations in the area.
Police intervention
Officers of the Nigeria Police Force later arrived at the scene and rescued the suspect from the mob.
Police sources indicated that the suspect was taken into custody for further investigation.
Authorities also recovered the firearm believed to have been found in his possession.
The suspect is expected to face questioning as investigators determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery activities.
Mob justice concerns
Incidents of mob attacks on suspected criminals have become a recurring concern in several parts of Nigeria.
Security experts warn that such actions, often described as “jungle justice,” can lead to wrongful punishment and undermine the rule of law.
Human rights advocates have repeatedly urged citizens to hand suspects over to security agencies rather than taking justice into their own hands.
Security situation in Enugu
Like many urban centres in southeastern Nigeria, Enugu has experienced periodic security challenges, including robbery incidents and violent crime.
Authorities have increased patrols and security operations in markets and other crowded public areas to prevent criminal activities.
Police officials have also encouraged residents to report suspicious persons or activities promptly.
Ongoing investigation
The Nigeria Police Force said investigations into the case are ongoing to determine whether the suspect is linked to previous robbery incidents in the area.
Law enforcement officials reiterated that suspects must be allowed to face due process in court rather than being subjected to mob violence.
Community leaders have also called for calm, urging residents and traders in Enugu to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining safety and order in local markets.
