(DDM) — Widespread outrage has erupted in Ozoro following disturbing reports that young women were assaulted, stripped, and sexually violated during a controversial community festival, sparking national condemnation and urgent calls for justice.

The incident reportedly occurred in Isoko North Local Government Area, where youths allegedly took advantage of the festivities to attack unsuspecting women in public spaces.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that several victims were targeted during the celebration, with some rescued by concerned residents who described the situation as chaotic and deeply troubling.

Sources within the community claimed that women were warned to remain indoors during certain hours of the festival, as those seen outside risked being harassed or attacked by groups of youths.

The development has raised serious concerns about safety, particularly for students of Delta State University and visitors unfamiliar with the local environment.

Traditionally, community festivals in the region are expected to follow structured guidelines, including prior approval and public sensitization by local leaders.

However, residents alleged that no official notice or security arrangement was put in place this year, creating a vacuum that allowed the situation to spiral into violence.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed awareness of the incident, describing the acts as barbaric and unacceptable.

Police spokesperson Bright Edafe stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, had ordered a full investigation into the matter.

Authorities assured the public that perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice, while also urging witnesses to come forward with useful information.

Reacting to the incident, the chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Godwin Ogorugba, strongly condemned the attacks.

He described the acts as inhumane, sacrilegious, and completely inconsistent with the cultural values of the Isoko people.

Ogorugba maintained that criminal elements may have hijacked the festival, insisting that such behavior does not reflect the traditions of the community.

He also emphasized that security agencies were already reviewing viral videos to identify those responsible for the assaults.

Similarly, the Delta State Government expressed deep concern over the reports, warning that cultural events must never serve as cover for criminal acts.

The Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, condemned the incident and called for swift prosecution of offenders.

He stressed that the government remains committed to protecting the dignity, rights, and safety of women and vulnerable groups across the state.

The incident has triggered intense debate across Nigeria, with civil society groups demanding stronger safeguards at public events and stricter enforcement of laws protecting women.

Observers note that the controversy reflects broader concerns about insecurity, youth violence, and the misuse of cultural gatherings in parts of the country.

As investigations continue, residents and advocacy groups insist that accountability will be critical to restoring public trust and preventing future occurrences.
