Robert Mueller, the former director of the FBI who led the agency through the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and later oversaw the investigation into ties between Russia and Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, has died at the age of 81.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement on Saturday, saying he died on Friday night and requesting privacy.
Mueller, appointed FBI director by former U.S. President George W. Bush, took office just days before the September 11 attacks, a moment that would redefine both his leadership and the agency’s mission.
Under his watch, the FBI shifted its primary focus from traditional criminal investigations to counterterrorism, transforming into a national security-driven organisation tasked with preventing attacks before they occurred.
He served for 12 years, spanning both Republican and Democratic administrations, and later remained in the role beyond his initial term at the request of former President Barack Obama.
Years after leaving office, Mueller returned to public service as special counsel, leading a high-profile investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election and possible links to the campaign of Donald Trump.
The investigation, which lasted nearly two years, resulted in charges against several Trump associates. While Mueller’s final report documented extensive contacts between the campaign and Russia, it did not establish a criminal conspiracy. It also examined whether Trump had obstructed justice but stopped short of making a definitive legal conclusion.
Known for his reserved and disciplined approach, Mueller maintained a low public profile throughout the investigation, avoiding media appearances and public commentary even amid intense political pressure.
Before his career in law enforcement, Mueller served as a Marine officer during the Vietnam War, earning several honours for his service. He later built a long career as a federal prosecutor, handling major criminal cases and rising through the ranks of the Justice Department.
His tenure at the FBI was marked by both challenges and achievements, including efforts to modernise the agency, strengthen intelligence capabilities and prevent terrorist attacks in a rapidly changing global security environment.
Mueller is remembered as a central figure in modern U.S. law enforcement, whose career spanned decades of public service at the highest levels.
