Hamzat, Yayi, Alli Emerge as Likely APC Consensus Governorship Candidates

(DDM) — Strong indications have emerged that the All Progressives Congress is considering a consensus arrangement ahead of the 2027 governorship elections in key South-West states, with prominent political figures tipped as frontrunners.

DDM learned that in Lagos State, the party is reportedly weighing the candidacy of Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor, as a possible consensus choice. Hamzat, known for his technocratic background and longstanding role within the Lagos political structure, is believed to enjoy the confidence of party leaders and stakeholders.

In neighbouring Ogun State, attention has shifted toward Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi. The senator, who represents Ogun West, has built significant political influence over the years and is seen as a strong contender capable of consolidating party structures across the state. Observers note that his grassroots appeal and legislative experience position him as a viable candidate in the emerging political calculations.

Meanwhile, in Oyo State, party insiders are reportedly considering Teslim Folarin as a potential consensus figure. Alli, a key political actor within the APC in the state, is said to be among those being evaluated for their ability to unify factions within the party and present a formidable challenge in the 2027 election.

The move toward a consensus arrangement is seen as part of a broader strategy by the APC to avoid divisive primaries that could weaken the party’s chances in the general elections. Political analysts say such arrangements, while often controversial, are designed to foster unity, reduce internal conflicts, and streamline campaign efforts.

Reports indicate that consensus candidacy has been a recurring feature in Nigerian politics, particularly within dominant parties seeking to maintain control in strategic states. However, the approach has also faced criticism from party members who argue that it may undermine internal democracy and limit the opportunity for broader participation in the selection process.

Party insiders reveal that consultations are ongoing among key stakeholders, including governors, national leaders, and influential party figures, to determine the most suitable candidates. These discussions are expected to intensify as the 2027 election cycle approaches, with considerations likely to include political loyalty, performance records, regional balance, and electability.

Observers also note that the South-West remains a critical stronghold for the APC, making the selection of candidates in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo particularly significant. The outcome of these decisions could shape not only the party’s regional dominance but also its national political trajectory.

As the process unfolds, party members and the public alike will be watching closely to see whether the APC formalizes the consensus arrangement or allows for competitive primaries. The eventual decision will play a crucial role in defining the political landscape ahead of the 2027 governorship elections.
