(DDM) – Leaders of the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic groups have come together in Warri to promote unity and foster lasting peace among their communities.

The initiative is being driven by the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice, which unveiled a series of strategic programmes aimed at strengthening cooperation and resolving long-standing tensions.

The move comes amid historical disputes and periodic conflicts that have affected relationships between the three ethnic groups in the Warri area.

Stakeholders say the renewed effort represents a significant step toward reconciliation and sustainable coexistence.

According to organisers, the programmes are designed to encourage dialogue, mutual understanding, and collaboration among community leaders and residents.

They emphasised that peace-building initiatives must involve all stakeholders, including youths, traditional rulers, and civil society groups.

The Centre noted that environmental and economic concerns have often contributed to tensions in the region, making coordinated solutions necessary.

Warri, a key oil-producing area in Delta State, has long experienced competition over resources, land ownership, and political representation.

Observers say such challenges have, at times, escalated into violent clashes, disrupting social and economic activities.

The latest initiative seeks to address these issues by creating platforms for continuous engagement and conflict resolution.

Community leaders expressed optimism that sustained dialogue would help reduce mistrust and build stronger relationships among the groups.

They also called for government support to ensure that peace efforts translate into long-term stability.

Analysts believe that inclusive peace-building strategies are essential for preventing future conflicts in multi-ethnic regions.

The programme is expected to include workshops, community outreach, and mediation efforts aimed at promoting harmony.

Participants stressed the importance of unity in driving development and attracting investment to the region.

They noted that peaceful coexistence would enable communities to fully benefit from economic opportunities.

The initiative highlights ongoing efforts by civil society organisations to address conflict and promote social cohesion in the Niger Delta.

As activities commence, stakeholders are hopeful that the collaboration will mark a turning point in relations among the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo communities.
